Stranding the assembly also depends on the specific application for which the cable is intended. Our cable production facility employs a number of differing stranding machines. Non-return stranding is of particular importance to our special cables because it guarantees a mechanically stress-free conductor position.

We differentiate between three stranding techniques: pair, layer and bundle stranding.

Pair strandingThis is the simplest stranding method, using a pair of conductors to create a new strand.

Layer strandingA maximum of five separate elements can be stranded together in a simple circular pattern. If more than five elements are involved, they have to be stranded in several layers. Layer stranding involves varying lay lengths and directions of lay, depending on the application involved. It is also possible to create a conductor assembly with different lay directions within a single cable.

Bundle strandingBundle stranding is far superior to layer stranding when high mechanical loading is involved and this includes torsional loads. The individual layered strands increase in size from the inside outwards, which means that the stranding on the inside could possibly fail under severe mechanical loading. That is why bundle stranding entails binding three to five strands together and then stranding these bundles.
